Canadian CPA is a professional accounting designation that is recognized across Canada and internationally.

To obtain a Canadian CPA designation, individuals must meet specific educational and experience requirements and pass a series of exams.

The requirements may vary slightly by province or territory, as each has its own CPA organization. However, in general, the requirements involve obtaining a recognized university degree in accounting or a related field, completing specific courses, and gaining relevant work experience.

Why are they converting?

There are a few reasons why people may want to convert from US CPA to Canadian CPA:

  1. Job opportunities: Obtaining a Canadian CPA designation can increase job opportunities in Canada, as many employers prefer or require candidates with a Canadian CPA designation.
  2. Educational Expenses: A CPA course in Canada can cost up to 20 lakh rupees, whereas a CPA study in the United States will cost only 3–4 lakh rupees. Candidates can save lakhs of rupees by taking a US CPA training and then converting to a Canadian CPA. In addition, completing a Canadian CPA course takes longer than completing a US CPA school.
  3. Regulatory compliance: If an individual is working in Canada and providing accounting services, they may be required to hold a Canadian CPA designation to comply with regulatory requirements.
  4. Personal goals: Some individuals may want to obtain a Canadian CPA designation as a personal goal or for professional development purposes.

Eligibility for Canadian CPA

  1. Converting from US CPA to a Canadian CPA from India is generally similar to the process for any international candidate. However, there may be some additional steps involved. Here are the general steps:
  2. Determine eligibility: Check the eligibility criteria of the provincial CPA organization in which you want to obtain the CPA designation. Typically, this involves meeting specific educational and experience requirements, including a recognized university degree in accounting or a related field, completion of specific courses, a certain number of years of relevant work experience, and having a valid US CPA license.
  3. Credential evaluation: Submit your educational credentials and transcripts to a credential evaluation service approved by the provincial CPA organization to determine if your qualifications meet the Canadian standards.
  4. Educational Requirements: You have completed at least 150 semester hours of college or university coursework, including a bachelor’s or higher degree from a college or university recognized by the State Board.
  5. Experience requirements: You will have to have a total of 30 months of relevant work experience. The 30-month experience criterion is met by applicants who have two years of relevant post-qualification experience. The International Practical Experience Verification and Employer Details form is required for applicants with fewer than two years of relevant post-qualification experience.
  6. Professional ethics and conduct: You must demonstrate knowledge of Canadian professional ethics and conduct standards, which may involve completing a professional conduct course.
  7. Apply for membership: Once you have met all the requirements, you can apply for membership with the provincial CPA organization to obtain the Canadian CPA designation.

In addition to these steps, international candidates may need to obtain a work permit or other documentation to work in Canada. It’s also important to note that the process can take several months or even years, so it’s essential to plan and give yourself enough time to complete the necessary steps.
